Since we have the freedom of speech in the United States of America, the art of persuasion is an important skill to acquire.
Below you will find the components required for your written essay as well as tips on public speaking.


i. ToPiC aND PuRPoSe
The first step is to pick a topic for your speech. The second step is to set a specific purpose for the topic of your speech that you will be arguing.

For your Webquest Project:

TOPIC: Choose a topic from the list provided
PURPOSE: State your opinion on this topic including, how you intend to persuade the reader/listener.


ii. iNTRoDuCTioN
The next step is to create an introduction. In the introduction, you will try to grasp the audience's attention by tying the topic, purpose, and your position (i.e. thesis statement) to the audience.


iii. BoDY
In the body, you will state your THESIS STATEMENT (defined as a statement articulating the purpose of your speech) and the reasons/points of validity to support your thesis statement.
NOTE: Be sure there is a transition between points of validity.


iv. CoNCLuSioN
Lastly, you want to briefly sum up your argument by re-capping the important points mentioned, as well as tying the topic, purpose, and your position back to the audience. This is where you want to make closing remarks. Keep in mind, you want the audience to keep thinking about your position on the topic AFTER your speech has concluded.
